The Bells at St. Mary's
We’d like to introduce you to the bells at St Mary’s:
We have 8 bells. We have 14 ringers and 3 learners in our band, with ages ranging from 14 to 84. We practice on Friday evenings 7.30 till 9pm. And we ring for our Sunday morning Services from 9.45 till 10.30am. We join other local towers for their practice nights and their ringers join us on Fridays for ours.
Bell ringing practice takes place on Friday evenings from 7.30pm until 9.00pm and ringing for Sunday morning services takes place from 9.45 until 10.30am.
We’re having a very successful year. The work on the bell frame to remove all rust and re-paint the frame to prevent further rust has been successfully carried out. The cost of this work was £8580 and we’ve succeeded in raising all the money needed to pay for this. Our sincere thanks go to everyone who donated so generously and to Notts Historic Churches Trust, the Southwell & Nottingham Diocesan Bell Repair Fund Trust and Broxtowe Borough Council for their generosity in supporting us with grants and also, our friends who donated through the Crowdfunder website, together with the various fundraising events that we have organized. Without this support the work would not have been possible.
We will be ringing for our Christmas Services:
The Eastwood Civic Carol Service on 8th December at 4pm
St Mary’s Carol Service on 24th December, Christmas Eve at 6pm
Our Christingle Service will be in January, date and time to be announced later.
Bell ringing is a very enjoyable hobby to have and we ring on bells in other towers, both in our District and Diocese and further afield. We also have other bands visiting to ring our bells. It certainly taxes the brain and you never stop learning. It’s also very good exercise, although it’s not a strength exercise, it is about the technique and listening.
